Acupuncture to Support Endometriosis

It takes an average of 8 years to receive a diagnosis of endometriosis in the UK. If you're on this page, there's a fair chance you've spent a good part of that time being told your pain was normal. It generally isn't, and there's now a decent biomedical understanding of why it hurts as much as it does.

What's actually happening

Endometriosis involves tissue similar to the uterine lining growing outside the uterus, commonly on the ovaries, peritoneum and bowel, where it responds to hormonal cycling and creates local inflammation, adhesions, and nerve sensitisation. This last part explains why pain can persist or worsen over time even without disease progression, the nervous system itself becomes more reactive, a process known as central sensitisation.

Where acupuncture is useful

Acupuncture has reasonable evidence for pain modulation through both local anti-inflammatory effects and central nervous system pathways, it can reduce nerve sensitisation, which matters given what's described above. It also has a role in improving pelvic blood flow, reducing prostaglandin-driven cramping, and supporting the fertility impact endometriosis can have via inflammation and adhesions.

In TCM, endometriosis sits firmly in the Blood Stasis category, tissue growing where it shouldn't, pain that's typically stabbing or fixed in location, and often dark, clotted bleeding. Treatment focuses on moving Blood and Qi to reduce pain and support pelvic circulation, alongside addressing whatever underlying pattern, commonly Kidney deficiency or Liver Qi stagnation, is feeding the stasis.

What treatment focuses on

Pain management around and through menstruation, inflammation reduction, and where relevant, fertility support given endometriosis's impact on egg quality and implantation environment through chronic pelvic inflammation.

Acupuncture for Endometriosis FAQ

Can acupuncture reduce endometriosis pain?

There's evidence supporting acupuncture for pelvic pain and dysmenorrhoea generally, working through both local anti-inflammatory effects and central nervous system pain modulation, particularly relevant given the nerve sensitisation seen in longstanding endometriosis.

Does acupuncture treat the endometriosis itself or just the pain?

Acupuncture doesn't remove endometrial tissue or replace surgical or hormonal treatment. It supports pain management, inflammation, and pelvic blood flow, and works alongside your gynaecological care, not instead of it.

Can acupuncture help fertility if I have endometriosis?

Endometriosis can affect fertility through inflammation, adhesions and impact on egg quality. Acupuncture's effects on pelvic blood flow and inflammation are relevant here, generally as part of a broader fertility support plan alongside your gynaecological management.
