Acupuncture for Menstrual Support

This is the catch-all for period concerns that don't yet have, or don't need, a larger diagnostic label: irregular cycles, painful periods, heavy bleeding, or a cycle that's gone quiet after coming off hormonal contraception. Your period is generally considered a vital sign, and when it's consistently irregular, painful or heavy, that's useful data that shouldn’t be ignored.

What "normal" actually means

A typical cycle runs 21-35 days, with bleeding lasting 2-7 days. Outside that range, or accompanied by pain that disrupts daily function, or bleeding heavy enough to soak through protection hourly, is worth investigating rather than normalising. Post-pill cycles in particular can take anywhere from a few weeks to several months to re-establish a natural pattern, and the assumption that it'll simply sort itself out isn't always accurate.

Where acupuncture fits

Acupuncture has evidence for reducing prostaglandin-driven menstrual pain (prostaglandins are the inflammatory compounds responsible for cramping, and excess production is a major driver of painful periods), regulating cycle length via HPO axis effects, and supporting healthy flow via uterine blood flow regulation, relevant to both heavy and light or absent bleeding.

In TCM, menstrual irregularity is read through pattern: Blood Stasis for painful, clotted periods, Qi and Blood deficiency for light or delayed cycles (common post-pill), Liver Qi stagnation for irregular timing linked to stress, and Kidney deficiency where cycles are consistently short, absent, or erratic. This is a page where TCM pattern differentiation does a great deal of the diagnostic work biomedical testing doesn't always attempt, because "irregular periods" alone isn't a diagnosis, it's a description.

What treatment focuses on

Cycle regulation through phase-based treatment, pain reduction around menstruation, and for those coming off contraception, active support in re-establishing an ovulatory pattern.

Acupuncture for Menstrual Support FAQ

How long after stopping the pill should my period take to return to normal?

It varies considerably, anywhere from a few weeks to several months, and cycles are sometimes irregular for a while as your natural hormonal pattern re-establishes. Acupuncture can support this transition rather than simply waiting for it to resolve on its own.

Is period pain normal?

Mild cramping is common, but pain that disrupts your daily activities or requires strong painkillers each month isn't something to simply live with, and is worth both investigating medically and addressing through treatment.

Can acupuncture help regulate irregular cycles?

Acupuncture has evidence for HPO axis regulation, which governs cycle timing, and TCM pattern-based treatment can address the underlying driver, whether that's stress-related, deficiency-related, or related to coming off hormonal contraception.
